Flash Point as a safety parameter for Biodiesel use

Pure Vegetable Oils are low volatility fuels due to their high Flash Point. To overcome this problem transesterification process is followed to produce biodiesel.

Flash point is defined as the lowest temperature of a liquid at which its vapours will form a combustible mixture with air. It is a convenient and reliable classification of the flammability of many substances, there are three main categories:
- Extremely flammable: Flash point below 0 °C
- Highly flammable: Flash point below 21 °C
- Flammable: Flash point below 55 °C

The flash point of biodiesel (>130 °C) is significantly higher than that of petroleum diesel (64 °C), or gasoline (−45 °C).

In this way, Biodiesel is much safer to use compared to standard diesel, as it has significantly higher flash point than standard diesel.
